Our social commitment

The Certification for Sustainable Tourism is a program that seeks to categorize and certify each tourism company according to the degree to which its operations comply with a model of sustainability.

The program evaluates four fundamental aspects:

1. Physical-biological parameters
Evaluates the interaction between the company and its surrounding natural habitat. It also evaluates the management policies and the operational systems within the company and its infrastructure, in terms of energy saving, water, pollution and waste handling policies and technology.

2. Service Management. Comprises the process where the company, considering all the internal and external elements, designs a product in accordance with the trends of the market and the proper characteristics of the country.

3. External Client: It evaluates the interaction of the company with its clients in terms of how much the company includes the client to be an active participant to the company's sustainability policies.

4. Socio-economic environment: It
evaluates the identification and interaction with the surrounding communities, analyzing the degree of the companies contribution to their growth and development.

The CST program provides a system of "sustainability levels", on a scale from 0 to 5, in which each number indicates the relative position that a company complies with determined sustainability standards.

The CST represents a new element of competitiveness, where products are differentiated based on the sustainable practices in the company. It encourages the right management in the use of resources in the company by saving water, using energy efficiently, and having a positive impact in the environment. For tourists and customers, it is a guarantee that the company implements programs and plans to minimize its negative impacts on the environment and the community.

The Commercial Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism is a problem that affects all countries. This problem is caused by locals or foreigners who travel to the country as tourists or travelers for this purpose. The Commercial Sexual exploitation is the use of minors, with or without their consent, for the sexual gratification of adults in exchange for money or any other good. Children, who are involved in this problem, are not guilty, they are victims.

The Tourism World’s Code of Ethics was issued by the World Tourism Organization and consists of a scheme to ensure the sustainability of tourism and reduce its negative impact in all destinations, by setting clear rules that apply for all countries. Its main purpose is that all countries fight and punish strictly this crime.

The Code of Conduct is an initiative of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and ECPAT (End child prostitution, child pornography and the trafficking of children for sexual purposes.) It seeks ensure that children everywhere enjoy their fundamental rights free and secure from all forms of commercial sexual exploitation. In Costa Rica, in October of 2003, the Code of Conduct began as a project from the tourism industry, sponsored by the Paniamor Foundation, with the support of the Costa Rica Tour Operators’ Association (ACOT), and the Costa Rican Association of Professionals in Tourism (ACOPROT), which now the Costa Rican Tourism Board is in charge of its implementation.

Sixt Rent a Car rejects any form of exploitation and especially the sexual exploitation that affects children and adolescents. In Compliance with the Law Nr. 7899 against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of minors, Sixt Rent a Car will cancel any contract with companies or people, who facilitate, contribute, tolerate or promote sexual exploitation of Children.

Sixt Rent a car signed the Code of Conduct last October 23rd, 2012, and we have established policies and procedures to act against any situation that threatens the Costa Rican legislation either by staff, suppliers, customers or anybody that has a relationship with our company.

Therefore, to implement the Code of Conduct, Sixt Rent a Car meets the following criteria:

  • We have established policies and procedures against sexual exploitation of children.
  • We have trained our employees in children’s rights, the prevention of sexual exploitation and how to report suspected cases.
  • We included a clause in contracts throughout the value chain stating a common repudiation and zero tolerance policy of sexual exploitation of children.
  • We provide information to travellers on children’s rights, the prevention of sexual exploitation of children and how to report suspected cases.
  • We support, collaborate and engage stakeholders in the prevention of sexual exploitation of children.
  • We report annually on the implementation of Code related activities.

In Sixt Rent a Car, we protect children from any form of Sex Tourism. In Costa Rica, the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and adolescents is a crime punished by Law with convictions ranging from 12 to 18 years in prison.
